why I do what I do
I'm Melissa Amaya, and I want to help you learn Python.
My mission and methods are simple - to help eager young people master programming fundamentals through engaging class sessions, and fun coding challenges.
I went back to school at age 36 to learn how to program. I have vivid memories of the struggle to understand basic concepts, memorize syntax, and the despair to exhilaration roller coaster that is programming.
I know what teaching methods most helped me, and which did not. From my time as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, I honed skills and refined my approach for helping others understand programming fundamentals.
After serving as an Adjunct Faculty member for Southern New Hampshire University and as a Middle/High School teacher for Veritas Scholars Academy, I wanted to focus my teaching efforts to helping High School students develop a love for programming.
With that, Amaya Learning Academy was born.
I'm a homeschool mom to four great kids. My oldest is a cadet at West Point. My second child is studying Aerospace Engineering. And I have two teenage boys still at home.
In addition to teaching my own children, I've been an engineering instructor at Southern New Hampshire University, and a math, logic, programming teacher at Veritas Scholars Academy.
I have my undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. I went back to college late in life to earn a Master's in Computer Science, also from UPenn.
While a graduate student I was a graduate TA for two courses, over 4 semesters.
I have worked as a software engineer at a number of start-ups, as well as larger companies like GitHub and Amazon. I now turn my focus to inspiring the next generation.
I'm a teacher at heart, and look forward to helping you master the fundamentals of programming!
I currently reside in Huntsville, AL with three of my four children, 3 dogs and 3 cats.
